HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA vs. GED

Does It matter???

by Corey Fisher

I often hear of students who believe that quitting school and getting a GED is just as good as having that high school diploma.  When students contemplate these kinds of options, I believe it is important for them to have the information available for them to make an educated decision.  Elgin Public Schools has a nearly perfect graduation rate.  However, sometimes students feel that if a GED will give them the same opportunities, then why not pursue that avenue.  This summer I was presented an article from Dr. Fredrickson that really shows that there is a difference and it is not a small difference.

The websites below are links to articles that give students and parents a great idea of the real differences between a High School Diploma and a GED.

I would point out that a GED is not a bad thing.  If that is the option that one chooses to take, it can be beneficial.  These articles merely show that if presented with a choice, the High School Diploma does prove to be more beneficial in the long run.

I can't speak for the other branches of service, but the Marines DO NOT accept GED's. A high school diploma is the only way to become a Marine.
