When Did the Green & White Flying Dutchmen Become the Orange & Black Eagles?

by Rita Heithoff

May 12, 2008

Alumni!  We're looking for the answers to when and why our mascot and school colors changed. We've heard that at one time Elgin High was the Green and White Flying Dutchmen.  If this is true, when and why were the mascot and colors changed?  How did they choose "Eagles" for the mascot and "Orange and Black" for the colors?  If anyone knows the answers, let us know! Give us your feedback!

Update!  I see in the "70 Years Ago" column of the May 14, 2008 Elgin Review that a Flying Dutchman hurdler, Danny Quinn had a successful track season.  Apparently we were the Dutchmen in 1938.  Again, if anyone knows when and why we changed, let us know!
