The Designing with Technology class has spent the last month investigating the use of technology in today’s society. We’ve been discussing proper and improper use of the internet as well as the consequences of risky online behavior. The students then used presentations developed by the NetSmartz organization and their own skits to help students in K-6th grade to use their “NetSmartz”. The 3rd-6th grade students were introduced to “Follow you Fiona”, a fictional online character who can easily disguise herself as someone they might want to communicate with, though her motives are not honest. Kindergarten through 2nd grade met “Clicky”, a NetSmartz character that discussed what to do if someone they didn’t know wanted personal information and your kids should say “UYN” (Use Your Netsmartz)!
Parents, don’t feel left out! The class has scheduled a presentation just for you on Wednesday, December 17th at 6:30 p.m. in the History room of the high school building. The presentation is straight forward about risky online behavior and is therefore intended for adults. A panel of high school students from the Designing with Technology class will also be available for a question and answer session about what they’ve learned. All parents of a 5th-12th grader are encouraged to attend.
