NEW POLICIES AT EHS FOR STUDENTS AND STUDENT-ATHLETES
New Sports Cooperatives Mean Changes in Participation and Conduct Policies For All Students
by Corey Fisher
June 12, 2009
With the development of the new sports cooperatives between Elgin High School and Pope John XXIII Central Catholic High School, the school boards at both schools determined that it was necessary to address certain policies and make changes that would allow the rules and consequences to be the same for all students participating in the cooperatives. There were three policies that were reviewed and changed. They are as follows:
• Standards of Conduct for
Participation in Extra-Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities
Policy (Attendance and Academic Eligibility Requirements)
• EHS Drug and Alcohol Policy
• Lettering Policy for High School Girls/Boys Basketball,
Wrestling, Girls/Boys Track and Field and Boys Golf
The changes made to the Standards of Conduct for Participation in
Extra-Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities include both Academic
and Attendance requirements.
The changes made in the EHS Drug and Alcohol Policy will be held for both students and student-athletes at Elgin High School.
One notable change that I would like to make you very aware of is that the new drug and alcohol policy now includes the months that school is not in session during May, June, July and August. The school’s previous policy only addressed violations that occurred during the school year when students were in session. This new drug and alcohol policy would offer consequences for students found to be in violation of the policy during the summer months when schools is not in session. It is important that parents communicate to their children and for the students to understand that if a student or student-athlete decides to violate the alcohol and drug policy at Elgin High School during the summer, they will earn the consequences that come with these decisions and those consequences will be enforced immediately in the fall at the start of the school year.
All three policies were voted into policy by the Elgin Public School Board of Education on May 14, 2009 at the regular monthly board meeting.
