Elgin FFA: SAE Projects and Tanking 2010

August 16, 2010

Elgin FFA/AG Ed News: By Mrs. Schwartz, Elgin FFA Advisor, Ag Ed Instructor
The Elgin FFA Chapter was getting back into the swing of things this past summer. At the end of May the new Chapter FFA Officers traveled to COLT in Aurora. The officers attending were; AJ Braband, Caleb Pelster, Justin Meis, Grant Beckman, Brieann Grosserode, and Devon Baum.  I would like to thank Ben Beckman for being their sponsor while at COLT and for Scott Beckman driving the officers down there!

The FFA members had a meeting at the end of July where they signed up for SAE visits and discussed what to do for a “fun” day. It was decided to go tanking down the Cedar River by Ericson. My husband, Charlie, and I took the members down and everyone had a great time on a beautiful day!

Mud fight!
Why wouldn't all the boys feel the need to climb into the deer stand!
Ahhhh....just chillin!

SAE visits were the last week in July. I traveled out to the members’ farms, ranches, and places of employment. I took pictures and asked them about their jobs. These will be some of the members submitting a proficiency next February. A proficiency is a record of their work showing income and expenses, hours worked, a detailed description of their job, inventory, and pictures of them working with descriptions.

The Antelope County Fair was also held the first week in August. A few FFA members show livestock at the fair as either 4-H or FFA members. Those members who showed livestock were; Grant Beckman- sheep, Devon Baum- cattle, Justine Meis- cattle, Brieann Grosserode – cattle. All these members work very hard during the summer to get their livestock ready for fair, great job you guys!!!

Once school starts all the FFA members will be starting up their FFA record books. Also, all members will be starting Range Judging. Some of the instruction on Range Judging will happen during class, but sometimes we will have practices after FB/VB practices in the evenings or maybe even before school starts. Parents be aware of this and ask your child frequently when practices are as it may be a short notice when we do practice. You may also call me at the school to find out. Lastly, all Agriculture students and FFA members will be bringing home contracts for Ag Ed classes and for FFA membership. Please read through these forms with your child and sign and return them to me.
